Wilhelmina Barns-Graham: London

Waterhouse & Dodd is pleased to present Wilhelmina Barns-Graham: An exhibition of works from the Trust.

Over 30 works directly from the Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust will be exhibited from every phase of her career. Many of the artworks have never been shown before.

This will be Waterhouse & Dodd's first formal show for Wilhelmina Barns Graham since we started representing the Trust.

Wilhelmina Barns-Graham is one of the most revered female British artists of the 20th century. Barns-Graham was born in St Andrews, Scotland, and studied at the progressive Edinburgh College of Art where she absorbed both the lessons of the Scottish Colourist painters and became acquainted with the European avant-garde. In the early 1940s she joined the growing artistic community in St Ives, Cornwall, which had developed around Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth. At that time St Ives was the epicentre of contemporary abstract art in Britain and Barns-Graham was a core member of the group. Over subsequent years her style evolved from a gestural form of abstract expressionism to a harder edged geometric style. Her endlessly enquiring spirit and strong theoretical thinking made each development entirely logical. Her work appears in most major collections of Modern British Art, including Tate Britain who hold over 30 examples.
