Modern British Abstract ArtFebruary 3 - 27, 2016

This painting is a rare oil from Bell's time in St Ives, Cornwall. Bell is often grouped together with other modernist artists from Cornwall, particularly his friends and contemporaries Patrick Heron, Terry Frost and Roger Hilton, however his time in the seaside town was actually rather short lived. The present work shows Bell's response to the Penwith landscape, although one must never see Bell's works as abstracted landscapes, more as evocations of the elemental forces which created the environment he experienced.

Modern British Abstract Art is a major survey of abstract painting from the 1930s to the present day. Our aim is to present works by very well-known artists such as Henry Moore, Terry Frost and Alan Davie, alongside more neglected artists whose reputations deserve to be restored. We wish to give a broad overview with over 24 artists represented and almost all works sourced from private collections, estates or studios. Many works have never been formally exhibited before.

Our exhibition incorporates all forms of abstraction from gestural expressionism to systems based constructions, with prices ranging from £900 to £170,000.

Artists represented in the exhibition include: John Armstrong, Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, Trevor Bell, Martyn Brewster, Maurice Cockrill, George Dannatt, Alan Davie, Roy Turner Durrant, Paul Feiler, Terry Frost, Stanley William Hayter, Glen Hellman, Roger Hilton, John Hoyland, Peter Kinley, Margaret Lovell, Peter Lowe, John Milnes-Smith, Denis Mitchell, Henry Moore, Terry Pope, Brian Rice, Harry Thubron & Donald Wells.
