Friday, April 20, 2012Perhaps the most iconic image of its time is coming up for sale in the May Sotheby's Auction: Munch's The Scream. Though this is hardly news I saw the work yesterday and feel that the fuss is understandable. To have a picture, not a painting by the way as it is a pastel, from such a specifically iconic series is rather special. The price tag is apparently a low estimate of $80m but we expect it to make more like $100m.

Wednesday, April 18, 2012Following a fabulous sale at Christie's on 7th February which boosted the morale of everyone in the art trade, Sotheby's fell somewhat short of expectations with a total sale result falling below the low estimate, even including premium. However, the sell-through rate of 76% was adequate and Sotheby's made a terrific price for the Monet snowscape entitled L'Entree de Giverny en Hiver fetching a hammer price of £7.3m.

Wednesday, January 25, 2012The sales this February in London comprise a mixture of quality, the finest work is illustrated on the front cover of the Christie's Evening Sale: a 1914-15 oil by Juan Gris, one of the only true Cubists that managed to embrace colour and work it elegantly into such a composition-led movement. Yet it is run close by the Sotheby's cover lot - a 1901 Klimt of excellent quality.

Friday, May 13, 2011This Spring saw a somewhat mixed-quality collection of paintings and sculpture put together by Christie's and Sotheby's. With no major collection up for grabs, the Evening sales provided no grand centrepiece as Sotheby's did in February with their 'Looking closely' sale. As such neither sale really soared. To attract

Friday, October 22, 2010Though there are many highlights in Sotheby's and Christie's sales (2-4 November) this autumn some works are notable for their rareness and quality, which should make for high prices if the sales this summer are anything to go by. Sotheby's are offering a seminal Modigliani nude, believed to be at an estimate of $45m-65m, which was bought in 1999 by the present European owner for under $17m.

Sunday, August 01, 2010Summer 2010 has been an exceptional season for the Art Market, from the Contemporary Art Sales to the great results seen in the Old Master Sales in July. Record sales in London, inflated in size and value following the relatively weak auction sales of 2009, were testament to a year of considerable growth. There seem to be plenty of buyers, especially at the top level, which acts to persuade potential consignors to offer their works for sale - secure in the knowledge that their reserves will be met.
