JOSEPH AUGUSTIN FONTANFrench

Joseph Augustin Fontan was born in Cremens in the middle of the 19th century and made his exhibiting debut at the Paris Salon of 1880. As well as still lifes he also painted genre scenes, portraits and urban scenes. Beyond that nothing further is recorded of his life and works and his paintings are apparently extremely scarce judging by the fact that none have appeared at auction in recent years. Nonetheless Bouquet de fleurs et éventail is a wonderful example of late 19th century French flower painting.
