JOHN NOEL SMITH & ANTHONY CARO

From 25 January to 17 February 2012

Waterhouse & Dodd will be starting their 2012 contemporary art program at  by holding the first major show of John Noel Smith’s work in the UK at our Cork Street gallery in London. Exhibiting alongside Noel Smith, we will be showing sculptures by Anthony Caro. John Noel Smith is widely regarded as one of the finest living abstract artists in Ireland, and his illustrious exhibiting career has included prestigious exhibitions at the Irish Museum of Modern Art and the Royal Hibernian Academy - both in Dublin. Having lived in Berlin for 22 years he was an important member of its vibrant art community, returning to Ireland in 2002.

Alongside Noel Smith’s recent paintings, we will be showing a small selection of sculptures by Anthony Caro chosen specifically to compliment Noel Smith’s work. Caro has been at the forefront of British Contemporary art for over 50 years, since his ground-breaking show at the Whitechapel London Gallery in 1963, his work has continued to move and expand in new and different directions. His work has played a pivotal role in the development of twentieth century sculpture.

The decision was taken to combine a show of Noel Smith with Caro because of a shared abstract language, one of bold forms and physicality. Both artists are however equally capable of producing smaller, more intimate works and our show will seek to represent both sides of their respective practices.

The gallery is open from Monday to Friday, 9:30 - 6pm. Further images for this exhibtition will be added nearer the time, in the meantime for more information please contact the gallery on +44 20 7734 7800 or email  cork@waterhousedodd.com
