LONDON - EMIL ROBINSON EXHIBITION

From 28 September to 21 October 2011

Someone and some other, 28 September - 21 October, 2011

Robinson works in the realist tradition. His works centre on depictions of the prosaic and everyday occurrences, which somehow evoke mystery and the suggestion of a wider narrative. He will contemplate these forgotten places or moments for a long period of time before committing them to canvas, and as such the best of his paintings have a considerable meditative quality. The minimalist compositions, with their rejection of anything superfluous, only add to this effect. As an artist he is not afraid to challenge the perception of what a painting is - be it a mere representation of an object or an object in its own right. In doing so some of his still life works will actually incorporate 3-dimensional material to emphasis the essential paradox in realist painting. An early work depicting a skirting board was, for instance, mounted in a box constructed by real skirting board.

Asked about his choice of subject material, Emil states “I paint all my works from direct observation, and I create the compositions from a rotating cast of objects and people. Less aesthetic objects appear in a few of the works: ceramic Christmas trees, outdated storage racks… I chose these objects because of their peculiarities, and by their color, light and texture in the paintings they take on powerful new life.”

Robinson’s work is already widely admired. In 2009 he was the debut artist in the Taft Museum of Arts Keystone Contemporary series of exhibitions that spotlights local emerging artists. Two of the principle paintings from that exhibition were subsequently exhibited by Waterhouse & Dodd at the Art Hamptons Fair where they sold to a notable private New York collector. Perhaps most notably, Robinson has exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC. Waterhouse & Dodd have also exhibited his work at the AIFAF Palm Beach Fair, Art Palm Beach, the London Art Fair and Art London. Prices range from £1,000 to 7,000.
