Edgard Scauflaire

Belgian (1893-1960)

Edgard Scauflaire was born in Lieges in 1893 where he studied under Adrien de Witte and Auguste Donnay. He was greatly influenced by Picasso and Braque as well as the members of the Laethem group who formed the backbone of Belgian painting in the early 20th Century. Artist’s such as Gustave de Smet proved vital to forming Scauflaire’s aesthetic.

The present work, a large canvas of nuanced composition and subtle colour, is laid before the viewer, enticing us into the scene. Each area of the canvas is used to create a harmonious and complete composition. The knife in the bottom right angles into the table at an angle to draw us into the centre as each and every shadow and wrinkle of cloth combine to create a perfect whole.
