Arthur Chaplin

French (1869-1935)

Chaplin was born in 1869 at Jouy-en-Josas, the son of the famous academic master Charles Chaplin. Chaplin junior studied under Bonnat and Bernier, beginning his exhibiting career at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1899. By 1903 he had received an honourable mention for his work and in 1904 a third class medal. After a visit to Holland in 1898 he became increasingly interested in flower painting, and it is these works together with his numerous portraits on which his reputation now stands. He died in 1935.
