ANTHONY HATWELLBritish 1931 - 2013

Although never a member of the Borough Group, Hatwell deserves special mention in relation to Bomberg’s time at Borough Polytechnic. Firstly because he was a founder member and regular exhibitor with the Borough Bottega and secondly because he was the only sculptor to study under Bomberg. After attending the Polytechnic classes, Hatwell enrolled at the Slade and in 1958 he became an assistant to Henry Moore. He became a member of the London Group in 1959 and served as the group’s Vice President from 1961 to 1963. In 1969 he took up a post as Head of

Sculpture at Edinburgh College of Art - a post he held until 1990.

Like many of the members of the Borough Group and Bottega, Hatwell avoided commercial solo exhibitions although he showed regularly in group and public shows. However, The Talbot Rice Gallery in Edinburgh held a full survey of the artist’s work in 2013, just six months before his death.
